Tax audit... Did you tense up just hearing those 2 words? You're not alone - nobody wants to be audited. Here are a few ideas to help you avoid some common audit triggers: 1. Report every source of income with an informational tax return. You may have received several W-2s and 1099s in the mail and the IRS has received copies of each of those forms as well. If your tax return does not meet (or exceed) the total reported income from these forms, you'll be getting a notice from the IRS. 2. Make sure your numbers match the reports. Even if an amount on a W-2 or 1099 is incorrect and you're not able to get it amended before you file, report the amount on the form. You can then correct the amount with an explanation, but the amount reported needs to match the information the IRS has on file. 3. Make sure your key information is correct. Confirm your Social Security number is correct and that the name on your return matches the one for your Social Security number. 4. Confirm who is claiming shared dependents. A child cannot be claimed by you and your ex-spouse as a dependent. 5. Keep all supporting documentation with your copy of your return. While nobody wants to be audited, it's best to be prepared. If you're organized now, you'll be ready and able to defend your deductions if you need to. ... See MoreSee Less
